In the days after his fall I looked after him. Dressing his wounds as best I could, I uncovered a journal hidden on his person. In those pages I found no evidence of a stoic and pure protector, the champion of love and safety on whome I had come to rely. Rather his innermost ramblings betrayed a creature racked by conflicting ideologies and delusion:

'In a most seren moment, this is when they come. The sprites flit to and fro like jet hair blowing in the wind, whisps of black smoke, sea jellies quick as lightning, ticking my face. They beckon me onward. They place my feet, move my hands, and I fly with them, breathing, seeing all and nothing. Faces appear before me, and as one by one the jellies turn to stains, I know that they are no more.'

'Serenity leaks away. Forms all around me, broken, will not stand again. And now always one that is not broken. Ever one remains.'

'Path and purpose lost to me, peace slips from my grasp. My aimless steps, though, are not without comfort...'

'...so long as they stray not too far from yours.'
