Lights in the distance. Shore, slowing approaching across the gentle waves. Violently, I began to shake with a deep and unnamed terror. His hand closed on my shoulder.

"Breathe," he murmered. The first word between us. He squared his focus on me and inhaled deeply.

I took a stuttering breath. Then another. Then a smooth one.

The man was whispering something. A prayer?

Tension melted from my body. I gazed again over the water, and the distant clamor of a market preparing for dawn drifted to my ears. For a moment, the blackness fluttered about me, guiding, beckoning.
